Un natural
24 februari in Van Kranendonk Gallery, Den Haag
Daan Zuijderwijk (1974) and Maaike Vergouwe (1978) both studied photography at the Academy St. Joost in Breda. Since 2006 they work together on various assignments and self-initiated projects.
Characteristic about the work of Zuijderwijk and Vergouwe, is their observation, without any judgment they document in an austere and simple manner. They emphasize this way of documenting by using large scale landscape cameras and film negative. By working with these big sizes a world full of details, textures and finesse reveals itself to the viewer.
In this exhibition work from two recent projects will be shown:
De herschepping van de Volgermeerpolder (the creation of the Volgermeerpolder)
Zuijderwijk and Vergouwe followed the development of nature in the 'Volgermeer' a polder near Amsterdam. They made subdued images of the landscape showing a certain kind of threat; this is not just a normal landscape we are looking at. The transition between a poisonous area and a natural landscape that reveals nothing of its past is shown in the photos.
Vanishing landscapes
Places where once peat workers stood up to their knees in the wet peat, are now the backdrop for this monumental photo series. Strips of land at the 'Vinkeveense plassen' seem to disappear, taken by the water. Zuijderwijk and Vergouwe photographed in the middle of the night this phenomenon of 'vanishing landscapes'.
